What Does it Mean to be a Christian Today?
What is "good" about the good news we profess? Join leading spirituality scholar, author, and teacher Sr. Ilia Delio in exploring the Christ adventure. Through this unique 24-topic series you will explore the meaning of Christian life in the twenty-first century. As we enter into a period marked by the science of evolution and quantum physics, global consciousness, technological connectedness and religious pluralism, the question of Christian life becomes urgent. Does Christian life make a difference or is it simply a program of duties and obligations, a life that anticipates an otherworldly heaven? In these talks, you will explore the heart of Christian life as an adventure in love. Christian life is an invitation to love. It begins in the love of God, emerges out of this love, and is destined to share in God's love in a new way.
How Do We Understand God?
To explore these ideas, you will begin with a discussion of God, who calls us into life. What is God and who is God as Trinity? How is the new creation story today, especially through the lens of evolution, helping us to see the triune God in a new way? What does it mean to speak of God in a world in the process of becoming something new? In a universe billion of years old with a future of potentially billions of years to come, the significance of life today finds renewed meaning in light of the primacy of Christ. Explore the traditional view of Christ as redeemer of sin and the alternate traditional view of Christ as first in Gods intention to love. Seeing Christ as the goal of the universe puts a new focus on the life of Jesus. Professor Delio will speak of Jesus life in view of the humility of God and highlight the centrality of the cross as the mark of Christian life that sets it apart from other religions.
How Do We Live the Christ Adventure?
Professor Delio will then turn your focus to Christian life as a spiritual life asking, how does the Gospel help shape spirituality? What is the place of sin and conversion? Examine Christian spirituality as the art of living in poverty, obedience, humility and compassion. Probe the place of suffering in this adventurous life. Does God suffer with us? Does God know the pain of human existence? You will examine a spirituality of transformation through the cross, using the lens of Franciscan spirituality, and explore the relationship between contemplation and compassion as the deepening of love. The final section will take up the challenging question, where is Christian life going as the dawn of a new age draws upon us? Explore the meaning of being transformed in Christ and becoming co-creators in the universe. Engage the meaning of Christian life, especially in view of world religions, and the relationship between Christian life and prophetic witness. Finally, we will ask, do Christians have a particular responsibility for the world and for the future of the universe?
This is a challenging series not only because it engages Christian life in the twenty-first century but because it impels us to set aside the formulas of dogma and to take seriously the meaning of Jesus as the Christ, the way, the truth and the life. Mahatma Gandhi, a devout Hindu, was impressed by the Christian message but claimed it had never been tried. This Christian Adventure in Love is an invitation to try Christian life as the way to proclaim it.
